When parents bring in their child for a routine checkup, they have multiple concerns in mind. One of them is radiation exposure. “Does my child really need an X-ray today?” is a question we often hear when kids come in for a checkup at our Independence, MO, clinic. The answer? No. Most children don’t need dental X-rays at every checkup. The frequency depends on their cavity risk, dental development, and clinical findings.
Why Kids Need Routine Dental X-Rays
Problems like large cavities are easily visible. Even kids point them out when they’re telling us about which tooth is hurting. But how deep is the cavity? Is it reaching the inner nerves (pulp)? Is it affecting the other teeth? These are the questions that need a deeper assessment.
Dental X-rays show what dentists can’t see with the naked eye. Using this tool, our pediatric dentist can find even tiny cavities that have formed in hidden areas between the teeth or under a filling.
We use them to detect other hidden issues like a pulp infection or impacted teeth. Dental X-rays are also very useful for tracking how well your child’s teeth and jaws are developing.
How Often Do Kids Need Dental X-Rays?
Children don’t receive their first dental X-rays at a specific age. Instead, the decision is based on their oral health, cavity risk, and stage of dental development. Many children have their first bitewing X-rays once they can comfortably cooperate and when their teeth begin contacting each other, but the timing varies from child to child.
High-risk children
This includes children with a history of cavities or those who have the habit of eating sugary foods, don’t brush too often, or don’t have fluoride in their local water supply.
They will need bitewing X-rays (to check for hidden cavities) every 6-12 months.
Low-risk children
If your child doesn’t have any of the high-risk factors mentioned above, they don’t need X-rays as frequently. We may suggest bitewing X-rays every 12 to 24 months or as needed.
Orthodontic cases
Kids with braces are going to need dental X-rays more often than others. Our pediatric dentist will recommend the type and frequency of X-rays based on your child’s orthodontic treatment and oral health needs.
Are Dental X-Rays Safe for Children?
This is a very common question we get at our practice. Many parents are relieved to find out that yes, modern digital X-rays are quite safe. They reduce radiation exposure by 80 to 90% compared to a traditional film. That’s a huge difference!
Most of the time, we don’t require a full scan of your child’s mouth. We can capture images of the specific area we want to check in detail, which reduces the radiation exposure even further.
The whole process usually just takes a few minutes and is comfortable for most kids.
