What is Missouri Medicaid?

The MO HealthNet program aims to provide medical services to those who meet certain eligibility requirements which are determined by the Family Services Division. Ultimately, the goal is to promote good health, prevent illness, limit disability, treat illness, and provide rehabilitation to people who need it most.

Who is Eligible for Missouri Medicaid?

To be eligible for Missouri MO Healthnet, you need to be a resident of the state of Missouri, a U.S. national, citizen, permanent resident, or legal alien, in need of health care or insurance assistance, whose financial situation would be characterized as low income or very low income. You must also be one of the following:

  • Pregnant
  • Responsible for a child 18 years of age or younger
  • Blind
  • Disabled
  • Have a disabled family member in your household
  • 65 years of age or older

What to Expect After Getting Approved for Missouri Medicaid

After you have been approved for Missouri Medicaid, you will receive a MO Healthnet ID card in the mail. If you are assigned to a MO HealthNet Managed Care Health Plan, you will also receive your health plan card in the mail. Don’t forget to bring these cards to your child’s appointment!

You can get healthcare coverage through MO HealthNet as long as you are eligible. However, you will need to complete an annual renewal each year. Typically, this needs to happen around the anniversary of when your MO HealthNet coverage began. If you don’t renew by the deadline, you could lose your coverage.

Are Preventive Dental Services Covered?

Missouri Medicaid for children covers 1 preventive dental appointment every 6 months. Besides a cleaning, checkup, and X-rays, fluoride treatments are also covered. Dental sealants are included once every 3 years for children 5 years and older. Other services may be included as well, like antimicrobial treatments, bitewings, and space maintainers.

Does Missouri Medicaid Cover Dental Work?

Your child can get the care they need to maintain a healthy smile. Missouri Medicaid covers many medically necessary treatments, like tooth fillings, composite bonding, dental crowns, and root canal therapy. Every situation differs, but gum disease treatment and other procedures may be included.

Can I Use Missouri Medicaid for Braces?

Orthodontics can be covered with prior authorization. Your child must meet certain criteria for coverage. Their benefits may also include the cost of retainers if they meet the requirements set by Missouri Medicaid.

Is Oral Surgery Covered By Missouri Medicaid?

Depending on the situation, Missouri Medicaid can be used for the cost of some oral surgeries, like simple and surgical tooth extractions, cleft palate treatment, TMJ problems, and biopsies. Sedation and anesthesia can be necessary for oral surgery, which will be covered using your child’s dental benefits.

Does Missouri Medicaid Cover Dental Emergencies?

Accidents can happen with no warning. You can get your little one the care they need quickly without worrying about a large bill. Missouri Medicaid offers emergency coverage, which will include the consultation, diagnostic services, and X-rays. Depending on your child’s treatment plan, their benefits may cover the expense of rehabilitative procedures, like dental crowns, bonding, or root canal therapy.
