Genetics, accidents, and missteps in oral hygiene can all cause teeth to suffer significant damage. If one of your child’s teeth is ever compromised, Dr. Dean and our Independence team might suggest a dental crown. This form of restorative care can fortify damaged teeth and allow them to continue functioning normally and without pain. Read this page to learn more about dental crowns for kids, and then give us a call when you are ready to request a consultation for your child.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a cover or “cap” that we attach to the entire visible portion of a tooth — everything that is above the gumline. A crown’s job is to fortify, strengthen, and protect damaged teeth while renewing their form and function. Crowns can be made of various materials. In our practice, we offer both stainless steel and metal-free tooth-colored options.

We might recommend a crown for your child if one of their teeth has severe spots of decay, is cracked or misshapen, or has other signs of damage that could worsen without proper intervention.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The process of designing and placing a dental crown usually requires at least two appointments in our office. During the first appointment, we must prepare the tooth by removing a bit of its enamel. If necessary, we can administer sedation to keep your child comfortable during this portion of the treatment.

Once the tooth is ready, we will take impressions of your child’s mouth. We will send the impressions, along with detailed design notes, to the laboratory that will fabricate the crown out of high-quality materials. While the lab is working, your child may need to wear a temporary crown.

When the permanent crown is ready, we will inspect it to make sure it meets our high standards before we attach it to your child’s tooth.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Some benefits that your child might experience as a result of getting a dental crown include:

  • Reduced dental sensitivity.
  • A lower risk of future damage to the tooth.
  • Better performance in school and enhanced confidence due to pain-free dental function.
  • A lower risk that a damaged tooth will need to be extracted.

Dental crowns are durable enough to last for several years, and they are always customized with the goal of creating a comfortable bite. If your child receives a metal-free crown, it can even be shade-matched so it is virtually indistinguishable from the natural teeth that surround it.
