Celebrating 20 Years of Board Certification with Dr. Neil Dean

If you are a parent in Independence, you already have plenty on your plate. Between school drop-offs, soccer practice, and trying to get dinner on the table before bedtime, choosing the right dentist for your child can feel like one more big decision. We get it. And we want to make that decision a little easier.

That is why we want to take a moment to share something we are really proud of at KC Kids Dental. Dr. Neil Dean has been board-certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry for 20 years. It is a credential that says a lot about the care your child receives every time they walk through our doors.

Board certification is one of the highest honors a pediatric dentist can earn. It is awarded only to those who complete a demanding evaluation process and prove, in front of senior experts in the field, that they meet the highest standards of care for children. Maintaining it for two decades reflects an even deeper level of commitment.

For families in Independence and the greater Kansas City area, this long-standing credential is a reflection of the kind of care Dr. Dean has always strived to provide.

About Dr. Dean’s Commitment to Board Certification

Dr. Dean has been caring for young patients since 2006. He earned his dental degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and completed his specialty training in pediatric dentistry at the Texas A&M College of Dentistry. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Earning board certification required years of preparation beyond his specialty training, including a written examination and an oral examination, with case after case reviewed by some of the most experienced pediatric dentists in the country.

What many parents may not realize is that board certification is not a one-time achievement. To maintain Diplomate status, Dr. Dean completes the recertification process. This includes additional pediatric-specific continuing education hours and a comprehensive recertification examination every seven years. It is an ongoing commitment that has spanned his 20-year career.

Board Certification Actually Means

What Board Certification Actually Means

Every pediatric dentist completes four years of dental school followed by two to three additional years of specialty training focused entirely on the oral health of children, from infants to teenagers, including those with special healthcare needs. This level of training is what qualifies a dentist to call themselves a pediatric specialist.

Board certification is a separate step, and it is completely voluntary. It is granted by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, the certifying body recognized by the American Dental Association. Dentists who earn this credential are known as Diplomates.

In simple terms: every board-certified pediatric dentist is a specialist, but not every pediatric specialist chooses to become board-certified.

What This Means for Your Child

Here is the part that really matters. What does this mean for your little one sitting in the dental chair?

It means the dentist looking after your child has been vetted by some of the most respected experts in pediatric dentistry. It means the way he handles your child’s first cleaning, a wiggly tooth, or even something more involved like a filling or sedation, is backed by years of training, testing, and continued learning.

For parents, it translates into real, everyday benefits in the care their child receives:

  1. Confidence in your child’s dentist. The credential confirms that an independent board of experts has reviewed the dentist’s knowledge and skill. Parents can trust that the person caring for their child has been thoroughly evaluated by leaders in the field.
  2. Care designed specifically for children. Children are not small adults. Their teeth, emotions, behavior, and growth all require a different approach. A board-certified pediatric dentist has proven the ability to handle the full range of situations that come with treating kids of every age.
  3. Greater safety during sensitive procedures. If a child ever needs nitrous oxide, sedation, or extra support managing dental anxiety, board certification provides additional assurance that the dentist has demonstrated a deep understanding of the safety standards involved.
  4. Ongoing care from childhood through the teenage years. From the first baby tooth to adolescence, a board-certified pediatric dentist watches for issues with bite, spacing, and development early, when they are easiest to address.
  5. A higher standard across the entire practice. When a board-certified dentist leads a team, that commitment to quality is felt in every part of the visit, from the front desk to the treatment room.

What Parents Are Saying

The best way to understand what makes Dr. Dean special is not through credentials. It is through the families who walk out of our office feeling heard, cared for, and at ease. Here are just a few of their stories.

“Cannot say enough great things about this place. I found this dentist after a bad experience elsewhere and my son is no longer scared of the dentist after his surgery here. After fully waking from sedation the first thing he said was, “I’m so happy Mom, my teeth don’t hurt anymore. I like that place”. (He’s only 3.5) Staff was so friendly and informative and the office was clean and inviting. We drove two hours to take him here and we will continue to make the drive with all of our kids in the future.” – Madeline Whitlatch

“I took both my small children to get their first cleanings done and they did wonderful, to the point my babies didn’t even want to leave! Everything was very personal. They gave them little plushies to take home after. It was quick and easy to get an appointment and now we can’t wait to come back to see you guys.” – Fuquana Davis

This is what board certification looks like in real life. It is not about diplomas on the wall. It is about a child who is no longer afraid of the dentist. A toddler who does not want to leave the office. A parent who feels confident driving two hours because they know their child is in the right hands. That is what we are most proud of, and that is what Dr. Dean brings to work every single day.

Questions Worth Asking Any Pediatric Dentist

We are sharing this because, as a parent, you deserve to know what to look for when choosing a pediatric dentist. Board certification is one of the clearest signs that a dentist has gone above and beyond to be the best at caring for children. It is a question worth asking, no matter which dental office you choose.

If you are still deciding where to take your child, here are some good questions to keep in mind:

  • Is the dentist board-certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry?
  • How often do they complete continuing education?
  • How do they help children who feel anxious about dental visits?
  • Do they offer care for all stages, from the first baby tooth to the teenage years?

These are the kinds of things that tell you whether your child will be in skilled, caring hands.

A Continued Commitment to Pediatric Dentistry in Independence

For 20 years, Dr. Dean has chosen to hold himself to the highest standard in his field, completing annual continuing education and renewing his board certification.

That dedication reflects the values that have guided KC Kids Dental from the very beginning. Whether your family is coming from Fairmount, Sugar Creek, Blue Springs, or right here in central Independence, we believe the children of our community deserve specialized care delivered with skill, warmth, and the highest professional standards.

Board certification is the formal recognition of something Dr. Dean practices every day. It is an ongoing promise to every child who sits in his chair, and to every parent who entrusts him with their family’s care.
