Losing a tooth is almost a rite of passage in childhood, but it doesn’t always happen by biting into an apple. Whether it’s due to a stubborn baby tooth, orthodontic needs, or other dental reasons, children can also need tooth extractions. For kids specifically, the recovery process can be difficult to navigate.
If you want to help your child get through their tooth extraction without complication, continue reading. Here are six ways to help your little one heal and ensure a smooth post-extraction experience.
1. Provide Comfort
After a tooth extraction, your child may experience some discomfort. Offer gentle comfort by providing something soft for them to hold onto or put their face against like a soft pillow or stuffed animal. Make sure they know that any pain or discomfort is temporary and will pass.
2. Follow Post-Extraction Care Instructions
Your dentist will provide you with some post-extraction care instructions. Make sure to follow them carefully and go over them with your tyke.
These instructions may include dietary restrictions, pain relief recommendations, and oral hygiene directions. Proper care is critical for a quick and easy recovery.
3. Encourage Soft and Nutritious Foods
While your child heals, opt for soft and nutritious foods. Soups, yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and smoothies are great choices. Avoid hard or crunchy foods that could irritate the extraction site.
Make mealtime an opportunity to spoil your little one with their favorite treats, within the dietary restrictions.
4. Help Them Stay Hydrated
Hydration increases saliva production which will fight bacteria and help your child’s socket heal more quickly. Encourage your child to drink water or milk. Avoid acidic sodas that may irritate the extraction site.
5. Distract and Engage Them
To keep your child’s mind off any discomfort, engage them in fun and distracting activities. This could include reading their favorite books, watching movies, or engaging in play. Distracting your little one from any discomfort won’t actually make the healing faster, but it will seem that way to them!
6. Encourage Good Oral Hygiene
Oral hygiene remains important, even after a tooth extraction. Help your child gently clean their teeth, encouraging them to brush around the extraction site. If they aren’t able to understand the instructions, brush their teeth for them, turning it into a silly way to bond.
While tooth extractions can seem scary for kids, with your support and proper care, your child will heal quickly and return to their happy, playful self in no time. If you have questions o concerns, always reach out to your dentist. Your child’s well-being and comfort are important, and they’re more than happy to help.
